STEPPING OUT
The residency for the chamber ensemble TRIOZ at the City Recital Hall is the first ensemble residency in this country.
“There are traditions of ensembles in places like New York and London,” TRIOZ pianist and founder Kathy Selby said. “But it’s the first time here and something of a coup.”
She is also the figurehead behind the Selby & Friends concept, of which TRIOZ is a part.
Selby is excited by the appointment as it will mean the trio establishing itself at a venue.
Her former ensemble, the Macquarie Trio, was part of the furniture at Macquarie University where it was in residence, though the appearances were more limited than what they will be at the Recital Hall.
“We will be doing performances in lone with our concert series (there are five in the series) plus we will also be doing once-a-month lunch-time performances,” she said.
“this is a great group and Angel Place is such a wonderful venue,” she said. “It’s a fantastic opportunity for us.”
With a new slant on the sponsorship side of things, Selby said there were a lot of corporate dollars out there but they were inaccessible to ensembles like TRIOZ.
“Smaller groups just can’t compete with orchestras – they have bigger dollars to spend even on things like securing more dollars,” she said.
The other members of TRIOZ are violinist Niki Vasilakis and cellist Emma-Jane Murphy.
The first Selby & Friends’ five-part 2008 subscription concert series is a challenging program of works by Schumann, Mendelssohn and Brahms. It opens at the City Recital Hall, Angel Pl, on Tuesday, February 19, at 7pm. Joining TRIOZ for this concert is one of Australia’s leading violists, Irina Morozova.
