Selby & Friends celebrates 10 years with stellar 2016 program of Australian and international guests

In 2016 the popular national chamber music series, Selby & Friends, celebrates its 10th year anniversary with a stunning line-up of Australian and Australian-based artists.

Critically acclaimed as a celebration of chamber music — “chamber music at its best” — Selby & Friends is beloved by audiences and highly respected for the calibre of the musicians and the varied and stimulating programs presented.

Artistic Director and Australian pianist, Kathryn Selby AM, formerly of Macquarie Trio and TRIOZ, is delighted to celebrate the 10th year of her eponymous series.

“A decade is a significant milestone for an artistic venture in Australia. Selby & Friendswas born out of my love for chamber music and my experience collaborating with many brilliant Australian and international guest artists, so it is fitting that in 2016 we celebrate that decade by highlighting extraordinary Australian musical talent.”

Selby & Friends is the only touring chamber music program in Australia that centres around one performer, Kathryn Selby, with an ensemble cast of extraordinarily accomplished collaborators.  In all but one of the 2016 concerts, Kathryn will perform with musicians based in, or born in, Australia.  Her local guests in 2016 are Dene Olding (Concertmaster SSO, Goldner String Quartet), Julian Smiles (cello Goldner String Quartet), Andrew Haveron (Concertmaster SSO) and Timo-Veikko Valve (cello ACO). Her ‘homecoming’ artists are Daniel Dodds (violin), Susie Park (violin) and Clancy Newman (cello), and her guest international collaborator is young superstar violinist Nikki Chooi.  The 2016 Selby & Friends programs include well-known chamber works by Beethoven, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Brahms and Shostakovich, alongside works by Busoni, Arensky and Australian composers Julian Yu and Gerard Brophy.

Selby & Friends concerts regularly sell out with audiences flocking to see these acclaimed artists in the intimate setting of chamber music.

“It is a privilege being part of the Selby & Friends’ series again in 2016,” said Clancy Newman who returns to S&F in 2016.

“It’s always fun collaborating with musical colleagues at this very high level. Playing in a small ensemble is exposed, intimate and challenging and Kathy’s programming is always intelligently balanced and deeply satisfying. The Selby & Friends audiences clearly enjoy it as much as we do on stage!  Happy 10th Birthday S&F,” he said.

Described by one reviewer as “…exactly what chamber music is meant to be…intimate, conversational, captivating, the music of friends, and a thoroughly enjoyable, personal experience,” Selby & Friends presents a subscription season of five tours in 2016 to various venues in Sydney, Adelaide, Melbourne, Canberra, Turramurra and the NSW Southern Highlands.

A press kit with images, biographies and concert details is available online atselbyandfriends.com.au.

Kathryn Selby and all the performers are available for interview.
