Kathryn Selby comments on the 2022 season:
“I am looking forward to returning to our venues around Australia, now also including the acoustically outstanding Primrose Potter Salon at Melbourne Recital Centre, with my friends and sharing a collection of gorgeous music, brilliant performers, and hopefully a laugh or two.
Selby & Friends has been described as presenting concerts that are “absolutely superb” “blockbuster performances,” and me as having “excellent taste in friends”, so of course the select group of outstanding musicians who are joining me for these enjoyable weeks of magical music-making and fun in 2022 are amongst the best in the world. Now we all just want to get together to play and share our love of music with our friends in the audience.”
Selby & Friends, now in its 16th year, was created by Kathryn Selby, AM in 2007, and her guest artists include many of the finest solo and ensemble performers from Australia and around the world. The series is widely considered “world class” and of “the highest possible level of performance” with many hailing Ms Selby as amongst the finest of Australian artists, as well as an “entrepreneurial force” on the Australian music scene.

This fresh new subscription season with chamber music by Beethoven, Arensky, Dvořák, Fauré Hindson, Ravel, Schubert, Schumann, Stanhope and more, is a joyful journey through 3 centuries of beloved chamber music, from Beethoven’s “Archduke” trio to Paul Stanhope’s splendid “My Song is Love Unknown” and Matthew Hindson’s “1915”. A hallmark of the Selby & Friends series is always the delightful anticipation of the musicians’ speaking from the stage about their own experiences in music – all within the intimacy of the chamber music performance setting.
Tour 1, 2022 – Back from the Brink
17th – 27th March 2022
This program celebrates composers who fought against the establishment, forging a way forward for those who followed. It introduces American composer Amy Beach, who wrote a strong rebuttal to comments made by Dvořák about women in music and became a national symbol of women’s creative power. Dvořák’s first piano trio is an intimate view into the great composer’s favoured genre, and Ravel’s music fused modern elements with the baroque, classicism and jazz. For this piano trio concert, Ms. Selby welcomes guest artists Sydney Symphony Concertmaster Emeritus violinist Dene Olding, and cellist Clancy Newman.
Works:
Amy Beach (1867 – 1944) – Piano Trio Op.150 (1938)
Antonin Dvořák (1841 – 1904) – Piano Trio no. 1 in B-flat major. Op. 21 (1875)
Maurice Ravel (1875 – 1937) – Piano Trio in A minor (1914)
Artists:
Dene Olding, violin
Clancy Newman, cello
Kathryn Selby, piano
Tour 2, 2022 – Four-Part Harmony
30th April – 10th May 2022
“Four-Part Harmony” is a delightful piano quartet program featuring two principals from the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, concertmaster Andrew Haveron and principal viola Tobias Breider, along with Goldner Quartet cellist Julian Smiles and pianist Selby. This program of beautiful piano quartets opens with lyrical music by Paul Stanhope, and moves through the passionate world of Faure’s music to end with the sumptuously melodic final piano quartet by Dvořák.
Works:
Paul Stanhope (1969 – ) – My Song is Love Unknown (2000)
Gabriel Fauré (1845 – 1924) – Piano Quartet No.1 in C minor (1883)

Kathryn Selby, piano
Tour 3, 2022 – The Archduke
17th – 24th July 2022
The July program probes the high romanticism of Beethoven’s great “Archduke” piano trio, and, with music by Arensky and the great Australian composer Miriam Hyde, is also a window into the sheer possibilities presented by the piano trio genre. Pianist Selby is joined by violinist Natalie Chee, who returns from the US following a two-year hiatus from Selby & Friends, and cellist Julian Smiles.
Works:
Miriam Hyde (1913 – 2005) – Fantasy Trio in B minor Op.26 (1933)
Anton Arensky (1861 – 1906) – Piano Trio No.2 in F minor, Op.73 (1905)

Natalie Chee, violin
Julian Smiles, cello
Kathryn Selby, piano
Tour 4, 2022 – In the Shadow of War
20th – 29th August 2022
This is a journey of exploration into how wartime conflict can impact composers. Australian Matthew Hindson reflects on the underswell felt by those called up to fight in World War I; for Shostakovich, it was the spectre of a world at war in mid-century; and Schubert was continually surrounded by the threat of war during the Napoleonic era. Kathryn Selby is joined by award-winning violinist Grace Clifford and Australian Chamber Orchestra principal cello Timo-Veikko Valve.
Works:
Matthew Hindson (1968 – ) – 1915 (2015)
Dmitri Shostakovich (1906 – 1975) – Piano Trio in E minor, Op. 67 (1944)
Franz Schubert (1797 – 1828) – Piano Trio in E-flat Major, Op.100 D.929 (1827)

Grace Clifford, violin
Timo-Veikko Valve, cello
Kathryn Selby, piano
Tour 5, 2022 – Tributes & Legacies
22nd – 30th October 2022
Closing the 2022 season is this program built around composers’ tributes to the past. Music by Ravel pays homage to the early French composer Couperin, Mendelssohn incorporates his own tributes to the legacy left by Bach, and Schumann’s first piano trio is highlighted with special personal significance for him of his beloved wife, Clara Schumann. Natsuko Yoshimoto, Queensland Symphony Orchestra Concertmaster, and US-based Australian cellist Richard Narroway are Ms. Selby’s special guest artists.
