Miles Mullin-Chivers is an Australian cellist who began playing at the age of four under the tutelage of Takao Mizushima. He later joined the Rising Stars program at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, studying with Susan Blake and then Julian Smiles. Under Smiles’ continued mentorship, Miles completed a Bachelor of Music Performance with First Class Honours at age 19.
His education has been enriched through mentorship and masterclasses from Fred Sherry, Tamas Varga, Timothy Walden, Hannu Kiiski, Howard Penny, Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt, Umberto Clerici, Phillip Müller, Raphael Pidoux, and Kasia Hans.
Miles has established a diverse career as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral player. At age 21, he was the recipient of the 1 st prize at the Gisborne International Music Competition. He is currently a member of the Alma Moodie Quartet. He has performed at the Canberra International Music Festival, Festival Oude Muziek Utrecht, the Four Winds Festival, and Het Reizend MuziekGezelschap. He has collaborated with many of Australia’s foremost musicians, appearing in series for Musica Viva, Live At Yours, and the Australia Ensemble.
In the orchestral realm, Miles has served as guest principal cellist with Phion Orkest and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. He has been a member of the Australian World Orchestra since its 2022 BBC Proms Tour. In 2020-2021, Miles was the Fellow of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, and an Academist with the Amsterdam Sinfonietta in 2024.
Miles is currently completing a Master’s in Classical Cello Performance at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam under the guidance of Gideon den Herder and Octavie Dostaler-Lalonde.
